How Google Customer Reviews Works

Google reviews are a relatively new Google feature that can be extremely useful for eCommerce websites.

Once you’ve collected 100 reviews (within 12 months) you’ll be able to have the ‘badge’ on your website, so you’ll have to make sure you’ve got a decent number of reviews. You may need to find another integration like Fera Social Proof to display the reviews on your site, as currently, the reviews go to Google and not your site.

Right now, the easiest way to manage your current reviews is by having Google Merchant Center as you can set up ads, shopping and all the additional Google add-ons you may need. You can link this account to Shopify so it may be useful for you!

Google Customer Reviews App and Shopify

The Google Customer Reviews works by asking customers (after they make a purchase) if they’d like to be emailed later on to leave a review about their order.

The idea of this “app” was to build and create trust in the eCommerce realm through a third-party rating system (Google). The email the buyer receives asks for a star review and lets them add a brief comment about their experience.

Originally this was only available to Shopify Plus Merchants as others need hacks or apps to edit checkout data. However, in July 2017 Shopify announced a new system for checkout URL migration so that all users were able to set up something like Google Customer Reviews.

How to add Google Reviews to Shopify

You can set up and register for the Google Reviews through your Merchant Center. Through the ‘Merchant Center programs,’ you should be able to find ‘Customer reviews’ to enable and save this feature.

This will provide you with code to copy. This code needs to be pasted into the Checkout–>Settings–>Additional scripts section in your Shopify store.

Usually, you can have a developer/website designer do this, or a Shopify Guru if you’re worried about messing anything up. You’ll need to edit your merchant ID number. You can change the estimated_delivery_date to whenever you’d like as that’s when the email gets sent. The default is 604,800 seconds which is 7 days.
